FOR THREE DAYS, IT WAS DARK.

News reporters scrambled. This was the biggest story to come along in weeks.

They called it a blackout.

The last one was in New York City in 2003, but this one was different, special, because the grids in six major cities across the country had been fried, kaput, see-you-next-Sunday. Everyone with some jurisdiction blamed each other, and when there was no one left to blame, terrorism rode in on its gallant steed.

It was the media’s fault. They were so busy stuffing fanatical Muslims with a penchant for Allah and decapitations down the American citizen’s throat, that they never saw it coming. I guess I shouldn’t be too hard on them.

They were partially right.

It was terror after all, but a whole new kind. And when the lights came back on, things had changed.

The dark had brought us visitors.

Carrie’s Review

From start to finish I was sucked into this book. The beginning intrigued me, had me asking questions and wanting more. And at the end I wandered if I would see Emma again. Emma is a strong character. She is intelligent and learns quickly but she’s not perfect. The other characters were easy to follow and relate to as well. The story was well laid out and hard to put down. A must read!

Choices (The Guardian Trilogy) by Liz Schulte

Hearts break. Loved ones are lost. Life keeps moving.

Olivia Martin’s afterlife was more dangerous and confusing than her life ever was. She thought she was ready to come back, to forget about Holden and to let go of the rage consuming her. Fulfilling her destiny as a guardian was all that mattered—the past could stay hidden in the crevices of her mind. However, when guardians are murdered and the evidence points towards jinn, she has to do something. To save anyone’s future, Olivia will have to confront the one person from her past she is terrified to see.

Holden waited for Olivia with the hope he would see her one more time. But when she didn’t return, he found salvation in darkness. The black and twisted road made it easier to forget what he lost than to live with the memory of what he had. An unexpected promotion shoves him into a world of intoxicating power and influence. Holden will have to choose between his new life and the woman he thought was gone forever.

From the ashes of Secrets, Choices are born that will change everything.

My Thoughts:

It’s not a secret that I’m a huge fan of Liz Schulte and all of her books but reading Choices just reaffirms my love for Holden and Olivia. It takes a talented writer to create characters that the reader falls in love with and roots for in the story. It is a truly gifted writer who can create a character so fabulously flawed, so deliciously bad and wonderfully conflicted, who makes mistake after relationship mistake and yet still has the hearts of the readers. Schulte has achieved this with Holden. His character is on par with Heathcliff or Mr. Rochester, a handsome, often heartless man who still manages to get my heart all fluttery. Holden’s flaws keep him interesting and help make him human while ironically Quintas, Olivia’s fellow guardian who is all that is good and honorable comes across as annoying, cloying and a little douchy.

I really enjoyed this book, not only for Schulte’s fabulous characters but for the great story.  She does a great job illustrating the internal turmoil Olivia has, being deeply wounded by the man she loves, hating him and yet still hopelessly in love with him. She has you sympathizing with a sociopath and hoping that love really can conquer all. It keeps you turning those pages because you can’t wait to find out what happens next and the ending…well…spoilers ;) I heartily reccomend this series and look forward to whatever Liz has for us next!

Forget Me Not (#2 of the Mystic Wolves series) By Belinda Boring

Forget Me Not  (#2 of the Mystic Wolves series

By the Unbelievable Belinda Boring

Only a fool would think they could steal from a werewolf …Anticipating a quiet night alone with the man she loves, Darcy’s world is sent into a spin with the arrival of someone from the past—Mason’s. She is further shocked by the intruder’s claim she may not even be the true mate of the Mystic Wolves Alpha. Accusations start to fly, leading to her new enemy being granted asylum, and this is just the beginning of trouble.

Relying on the reassurances of Mason and the support of her friends and Pack, Darcy soon falls under attack. Suspicions are raised, and with no other choice, she must flee with Devlin to safety where hopefully they can untangle the lies hidden behind the use of magic. Time is quickly ticking away, leading to a showdown where everything is on the line.

They need to uncover the truth before it’s too late, or once again, Darcy will need to fight to hold onto her dreams.

Lisa’s Review -Ok here is my checklist:  No dinner check, house not cleaned check, son feeling neglected check, check.  Start and finish Forget Me Not by Belinda Boring done, priceless.  She has done it again.  Started the book and couldn’t put it down.  How much needs to happen to poor Darcy and Mason till they could finally have their mating ceremony.
Throw in the sexy and gorgeous vampire Devlin doesn’t even disappoint me in the very least.  And Devlin’s nephew Vlad is a riot.   This ride that Belinda takes us on is so vivid you caught up in the story that you forget it is a story because you want to reach in the book and scratch Ambers eyes out and choke her to death.
The love that Darcy and Mason have is so intense and exhilarating you forget that they cant mate before the ceremony so you are hot and frustrated that you need to take a cold shower.
Belinda writes the book with consideration and cares for her writers that she makes it able to be read by a young adult without it being to sexy.  She puts taste in her books.  I for one can’t wait till book 3 Testing Fate comes out because I have to know what happened on the Grand Canyonof cliffhangers that she left me hanging from.
About LisaI am a single mother of a very active 6 year old boy. So just by saying this you know why I need to read. Reading has always been my so called drug of choice. I read several books a day if I can. My typical genre is paranormal, YA, with romance mixed in. If you have vampires, witches, werewolves, or Greek mythology you have me from the start. I fell in love with paranormal with authors such as Christine Feehan Carpathian novels, Sherrilyn Kenyon Dark Hunter novels. Just enough romance mixed into the paranormal.

Review- 77 Days in September by Ray Gorham

On a Friday afternoon before Labor Day, Americans are getting ready for the holiday weekend, completely unaware of a long-planned terrorist plot about to be launched against the country. Kyle Tait is settling in for his flight home to Montana when a single nuclear bomb is detonated 300 miles above the heart of America. The blast, an Electro-Magnetic Pulse (EMP), destroys every electrical device in the country, and results in the crippling of the power grid, the shutting down of modern communications, and bringing to a halt most forms of transportation.

Kyle narrowly escapes when his airplane crashes on take-off, only to find himself stranded 2,000 miles from home in a country that has been forced, from a technological standpoint, back to the 19th Century. Confused, hurt, scared, and alone, Kyle must make his way across a hostile continent to a family he’s not even sure has survived the effects of the attack. As Kyle forges his way home, his frightened family faces their own struggles for survival in a community trying to halt its slow spiral into chaos and anarchy.

77 Days in September follows Kyle and his wife, Jennifer, as they are stretched past their breaking point, but find in their devotion to each other the strength to persevere.

My Thoughts:

Have you seen the movie on the National Geographic channel called Doomsday Preppers? My husband and I love watching that show. It’s like a car wreck; disturbing but you just can’t take your eyes off of it. People, convinced that some cataclysm or disaster is going to bring our nation to its knees, be it a super volcano, nuclear holocaust, collapse of our government, failure of the power grid, you name it and someone is afraid of it. People hoard years worth of food, medicine and supplies, retrofit their homes into self-sufficient compounds or bunkers and practice drills of hypothetical dystopian situations.

It’s fascinating. It also gives me nightmares. Somewhere, deep down in my psyche is a niggling worry that one of these far-fetched disasters could very well happen and then where would we be? 77 Days in September is a fictional story, based on a scientific end-of-days possibility of a centered EMP or electro-magnetic pulse that wipes out the electronics in all of North America and brings society to a crashing halt. The book is centered on Kyle Tait and his family, separated by 2,000 miles as Kyle struggles to walk home from Houston, Texas to Deer Creek, Montana.

Gorham puts you in the minds of people fighting for survival and doing anything they can to keep themselves and families warm and fed, sometimes doing things morally abhorrent but necessary. Gorham’s characters are complex, believeable as is the story. It’s not some crazy sci-fi horror but a situation that has people right now stocking up on canned goods and learning survival techniques in case the proverbial Sh*& hits the fan. This is a great summer read and I highly reccommend it. It’s compelling and sucks you in from the beginning and, when you finish, you’ll wonder what you’d do if put in the same situation. I think I might hit costco, buy a horse or maybe invest in an emergency seed kit, just in case.
